How do I get my hair to look like Josh Hartnetts in "Lucky Number Slevin"?

Hello, I usually have problems with my hair, its too thick and that might be my main problem with doing this, but its around the proper length.

I was wondering what products I would use to get my hair to look like Josh Hartnetts in this movie, which looks like its straight and well contained but still has a messy look in some scenes, other than that it seems to spike in a few parts.

My hair usually goes wavy\curly and this prevents me from doing this with just hair wax.
