the best thing to do is till your hair dress you want a layered cut with extreme razoring and angular edges. you'll have to straighten your hair to achieve that look.

I really wouldn't go short, I've got mix hair and I find anything above my bra strap is too hard to control.
If you have long hair, get it relaxed, have a weave and then get them to cut it as it'll be easier to style

Just find a picture of anyone with the hairstyle you're looking for. If your hairstylist is open and talented enough, she'll know how to get your hair texture to look like the picture.

The girl doesn't have to be black if you want the same haircut. Any picture of the cut you want will suffice, and I don't know of enough black girls with "emo" hair to provide a picture. Frankly, I hate emo hair, but I do like Rihanna's cut which looks sort of emo.
