What the heck is scene/emo/goth/ect?

I'm so sick of these "emo" and "scene" and "goth" crap questions. This isn't the right board for asking about cutting or dying your hair or clothes. Most importantly, I can't figure out what the heck they're talking about with these terms! What is goth, scene and emo?!

What the heck is scene/emo/goth/ect?

goth, scene and emo are basically like cliques. emos are depressed computer geeks that wear dark clothes, goths are into metal and wear dark clothes, and scene kids are into what ever is cool at the moment. that's it. it's not hard. are you like homeschooled or something?

I've never heard "scene" before. But...

Goth is sort of a sub-culture of people who like music from the gothic-industrial genre and generally gravitate towards movies and literature that reflect general feelings of alienation and despair. There is also a style of dress that is favored by many in the sub-culture, most often involving dark clothing that also accompanies use white face-paint and black eyeliner and/or black lipstick. There are also some Victorian elements to some of the apparel that Goths might choose to wear. You can also like gothic-industrial music but not adopt the clothing style. Gothic/industrial/darkwave music also includes a sub-genre that is unfortunately known as "futurepop" even though it is far out of the mainstream and only played on Goth radio stations (exclusively found online) or weekly radio shows dedicated to Gothic and industrial music.

I don't know much about "emo", but my understanding is that there could easily be some confusion between "emo" and "goth". I think that the style for "emo" entails wearing tight clothing (primarily T-shirt and jeans) and (at least with respect to guys) wearing the hair long in the front, often covering the eyes. Dying the hair jet-black is also common, although, unlike goths (who dye with bright colors also), emos seem to favor only dying hair black.

Wearing black clothing and dying one's hair jet-black with long bangs are favored by members of both communities; however, the musical genres that accompany the gothic and emo styles are from distinct lineages. Gothic music has it's roots in Joy Division and Bauhaus with inspiration also from The Cure, Siouxie and the Banshees, and Depeche Mode among others. The music often associated with the emo movement is more closely linked to the alternative rock of the post-grunge 90's with some influence from The Smiths and other post punk bands that also may have influenced gothic.

.X. EMO .X.

Emo is short for Emotive-Hardcore, a music genre from the 1980's DC punk scene. This genre of music pretty much died in the 90's, but obviously the label is still around. In the 90's the media bastardized this word so that people now think it's short for emotional.

As for Emo kids, well...they keep changing. In the 80's they resembled punks. In the 90's they were kind of nerdy, with sweater vests. EARLY 2000's, Emo kids were deep kids that wrote poetry, wore black rimmed glasses, and played acoustic guitar. They were vegans that got all of their clothes from thrift stores. Their style was still nerdy, but it started getting more and more mall goth (black)/scene(skinny jeans). In just recent years they have taken up the habit of self-harming, being extremely whiney, and "suicidal". They now buy out Hot Topic and entirely resemble mall goths (not to be mistaken with real goths that usually despise Hot Topic). Just in the past year or two they have also started to steal more from the Scene style, which actually came from Japan and the 80's (the big hair, skinny jeans, obscene amout of pictures). They listen to alternative metal and pop-punk only they call it Emo. These kids are just lost, confused, and lonely. They crowd under this label so as not to feel alone. They will most likely grow out of this.

.X. SCENE .X.

Scene kidds tend to be loud and generally have a good time. They have a lot of confidence, which makes some of them stuck up. They take a lot of pictures (to post on their Myspaces!). They like little kid things like dinos, hairbows, coloring books, and playing in playgrounds. They like to go to concerts, but refer to them as "shows". They wear skinny jeans, tight shirts, and eyeliner.

The girls usually have a choppy hair cut, and they tease their hair a lot. The guys usually have long bangs which must be tossed out of their face. The girls usually have bright make-up. They love EVERYTHING in day-glo colors. They like to add extra letters to words, like kid is kidd, rawr is rawwr, et cetera. They use old slang like stellar and rad.

They also listen to hardcore music and love bands that nobody else has ever heard of.

.X. GOTH .X.

Goth: Someone who conforms to the subculture of Goth, which came from the 80's. Goth people tend to be intellectual and philosophical. They tend to like non-mainstream anything, including independent music. Does not require black clothes, just a love for the unusual.

Goth Bands: Siouxsie and the Banshees, Bauhaus, Sisters of Mercy, The Cure.

Mall Goth: A teenager who calls themselves Goth, but only listen to Marilyn Manson and really dress in black as a big eff you to their parents and society. This is the type of Goth that people grow out of.
